About the Item

The Alchemist. Oil on panel. Follower of LUCAS VELÁZQUEZ, Eugenio (Madrid, 1817-1870). Period frame, 17th century. Oil on panel that presents a simple interior, with a large number of striking elements (skeleton, skulls, jars, skulls, furniture, etc.) following common Spanish Baroque models. Towards the center there is a figure covered with a long tunic with large sleeves, with the hood up, who appears tending to a cauldron that is cooking over the fire. In this work, a palette of dark tones has been chosen, with a few touches of brighter tones, and a clear predominance of color over the drawing and a notable brushstroke are shown. Eugenio Lucas Velázquez (previously known as Eugenio Lucas y Padilla) was a Spanish painter located within Romanticism whose main profession was that of a cabinetmaker. However, he was always linked to the world of painting, training at the Royal Academy of San Fernando in Madrid and at the Prado Museum. He participated in the Universal Exhibition in Paris in 1855, in the Exhibition of the aforementioned Academy in 1841, etc. He traveled to Paris, where he learned about the work of Delacroix, to Morocco (receiving inspiration for his orientalist work), etc. His work, after some classicist beginnings, soon showed the influence of Velázquez and Goya, and dealt with a very broad theme (portraits, landscapes, caricatures, genre scenes, customs, satire, landscapes, witchcraft and inquisitorial scenes, etc.). His paintings can be seen in institutions such as the Lázaro Galdiano Museum (Madrid), the Cerralbo Museum (Madrid), the Prado Museum (Madrid), the Carmen-Thyssen Museum (Málaga), the Goya Museum (Castres), etc. Among his followers, but of lower quality than his, will be his own son Eugenio Lucas Villaamil, the result of his relationship with Francisca Villaamil, sister of the romantic painter Jenaro Pérez Villaamil, among others. · Size: 31x4x25 cm; int: 20 x 13 cm International Buyers – Please Note: for those articles that need Export Permits (those older than 100 years), the obtaining of the Permit will be processed without additional expenses (if you choose the seller sends it to you), but the period for the obtention of it may vary from 10 to 35 days.
