Our lovely painting is signed in a lower right by Alfred Arthur Brunel de Neuville circa 1880-1900. Beautiful hand carved giltwood frame, in excellent original condition. Measurements unframed: W 25.98 In. - H 21.25 In. Measurements with frame: W 37.00 In. - H 32.67 In. Our painting is in excellent original condition, and it was recently professionally cleaned. Biography: Alfred-Arthur Brunel de Neuville (1852 - 1941) was a French painter. Having received somewhat basic training from his father, he became famous in his twenties and thirties as a leading animal artist of the Paris school, focusing on domestic cats and then later on still life subjects, such as fruit and flowers. He exhibited work at the Societe des Artistes Français from 1879 and was elected a member in 1907. Throughout his life, Brunel de Neuville worked hard to improve his skills, and later paintings are both more complex and intricate than earlier works. Both dogs and cats became famous as the subjects of a romantic/realist genre at which de Neuville excelled. His trademark painting is a group of playful kittens playing with a ball of wool or other domestic objects. Although the style is broadly realist, some of the cat paintings are just a touch impressionistic in tone. Positively the cats are not depicted as a natural subject in a strict realist way. Many of his still lifes have a charming French bucolic feel. Brunel de Neuville died in 1941 and is buried in Montmartre Cemetery in Paris. His works can be seen in museums at Béziers, Brest, Chateau Thierry, Louviers.
