ALICE BIERNE SAWTELLE MACKENZIE 1898-1989 The Flower Selle Mexico, circa 1940. Oil on canvas. 22" x 18" in. (61.1 x 45.7 cm.) Frame: 30 1/2" x 24 1/4" in. (77.5 x 61.5 cm.) Alice MacKenzie was born in Fort Riley, Kansas in 1898. She studied at the Corcoran School (at the Corcoran Gallery of Art, today the Corcoran School of the Arts and Design) in Washington D.C., (c.1919-1921), as well as the Art Students League and the New York School of Fine and Applied Art (today the Parsons School of Art and Design) in New York, after which she was a decorative artist. Later in Canada, her studies included attending the Banff Summer School of Fine Art in 1947, where she was instructed by A.Y. Jackson of the Group of Seven. In the mid-1920s, Mackenzie provided illustrations for magazines such as Maclean’s.

    Kellogg & Comstock SHEPHERDESS OF THE ALPS original Kellogg & Comstock hand-colored lithograph, Published by D. Needham (American, 1808 - 1888). Circa. 1848-1850. image: 12 in x 8 1/2 in; 30.48 cm x 21.59 cm. overall: 15 in x 11 in; 38 cm x 28 cm. Strong and clear impression, overall very good condition, paper has a light oxidation and restored small tear middle left side Framed, no glazing This hand colored print is of a young girl and two goats standing near a stream in a forested area. The girl is wearing a knee-length dress with short puffed sleeves and long stockings. She is feeding a goat with flowers and grass from her apron. The original "Shepherdess of the Alps" appears to have been a play by Marmontel, which enjoyed great popularity in France, England, and America in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. He began working as an artist in 1952 at the age of 19, studying at the Center d'Art in Port-au-Prince under the guidance of Dewitt Peters, where he met and worked alongside Normil, Lazare, Obas and other great Haitian artists; continuing his education at “Foyer Des Arts Plastiques” with a group of friends.
