"American Gothic, " New England Scene Painting, Church in Clearing by Redka

About the Item

Although it shares a name with Grant Wood's iconic painting, the subject of Eugenia Redka's painting here is much different, a charming white painted Gothic church in the middle of the Vermont woods. The surrounding trees make a protective embrace of the building, their crisscrossing boughs forming a lacy overlay of Gothic arches above the steeple. On the ground below, a cluster of people are heading to the church, no doubt to worship. Redka was known for her printmaking and graphic design, and exhibited at the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Art Institute of Chicago.
