Outstanding oil on canvas by Anselmo Miguel Nieto, representing a female nude. It was in the genre of portraiture that the painter shone above all others, but it is his portraits of women that made him an exceptional painter. The work represents the naked body of a woman in the foreground, a young woman of sensual beauty who poses for the painter lying on a bed, looking directly at the viewer in an insinuating and somewhat mysterious way, typical of the symbolist current. She is the absolute protagonist of the composition, with nothing to distract our attention. The way of representing the features of her portrayed face, almost photographic, show that behind the work there is a very detailed study by the painter, who thus shows himself to be a master of drawing. There are details that capture our attention to a greater extent, such as the ring he wears on her hand, the gloss on his lips... and, above all, the intensity of her gaze. However, despite the careful anatomical study, this very precise drawing softens when it comes to giving life to the woman's skin, with a looser and more vaporous brushstroke, although it still does not lose detail. This brushstroke becomes completely free and sketchy as it passes into the background. On some occasions, as in this case, the backgrounds of his works appear to be unfinished, which conveys the freshness and spontaneity of the unfinished. His personal style is shaped by the mixture of the different influences that affected him. Continuous references to Renaissance art and the nudes of the great painting masters are found in this type of work. His training was eminently classical and academic, and from an early age he showed himself to be a great admirer of the previous great masters. Many of his nudes seem to be directly inspired by those of Velázquez or Goya, although he also got to know the Renaissance directly, especially Raphael, during his stay in Rome. From the Venetians, particularly, from Tintoretto, he took his loose technique and the sense of decorativeness; of his contemporary Sorolla, the treatment of light; and from English Pre-Raphaelism and from his companion Julio Romero de Torres, the symbolist line. He found in the naked body of the woman the quintessence of beauty and exquisiteness. However, they are not idealized Venus models, but real women in the fullness of their beauty and the splendor of her body; although the accentuation of the erotic does not make him fall into vulgarity, but rather he remains elegant. He makes the woman the protagonist of his painting, of this painting and of his entire career. There are many influences that marked our artist. His work is a mixture between the modernism typical of the time he lived in and his deep desire to evoke in his paintings a refined, idealised classicism, overflowing with beauty, trying to link up with the great masters of the past. The very insistence on the subject of women demonstrates, once again, her passionate search for beauty. It comes from a private collection, and was acquired by direct purchase from the heirs, from the artist's granddaughter. The Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía has on loan at the Museo de Jaén a work in which the same woman is represented, with practically the same pose, except that she raises one of her arms, directing it directly towards a fruit still life and a monkey appearing in the background. Dated in 1920, with somewhat larger dimensions. The painting that we present seems to be the study or work prior to the final composition. The inspiration of these two works in Manet's Olympia (1863) is more than evident. More about the artist. Anselmo Miguel Nieto was one of the most important Spanish portrait painters of the 20th century and, in general, of the history of painting in our country. He lived through the moment of development and apogee of the Spanish modernist current, with its center in Catalonia; He related to the cultural elite of the moment, names as well known as Romero de Torres, Zuloaga, Ricardo Baroja, Valle-Inclán... and he represented many of them in his portraits, but his favorite muses or models were women, many of them well-known At the time, dancers, actresses... Thus, he became the painter par excellence of women, beautiful and sensual. His female nudes find little competition in Spanish and international painting. Several causes are attributed to the ignorance or forgetfulness of his painting, among them the continuous refusal of the painter before the official competitions, since his only concern was the purity and perfection of his art, although it must also be taken into account that the type of painting to which he dedicated himself, so praised and flattered at the beginning of the century, he soon lost popularity in pursuit of a more modern art, following in the wake of what was developing in the rest of Europe, in search of a cultural advance that the art suffered from. country after the war and the beginning of the dictatorship.
