Antiochus and Stratonice
About the Item
Antiochus and Stratonice, circle of Girolamo Brusaferro (c. 1684 - Venice, c. 1760), oil on panel, measures 21x31 cm, with 20th-century frame 31x41 cm, 3 cm thick.
On the back of the painting is a fragment of an old label written in French that tells the story of Antiochus and Stratonice.
This is the story told by the great biographer and philosopher Plutarch (ca. 46 A.D. C.-after 120), in his parallel Lives devoted to the existences of distinguished men.
It tells of Demetrius, whose beautiful daughter, Stratonice, had been given in marriage to the old king Seleucus. In spite of this, Antiochus, the son of the elderly groom, fell madly in love with his father's comely consort as soon as he saw her; however, sensing the slim chances of fulfilling his secret dream of love, he was seized by melancholy and a debilitating malaise.
Seleucus, concerned about the health of his heir, decided to call to Antiochus' bedside the famous physician Erasistratus, the old man portrayed behind the sick man, so that he could heal him; he immediately understood what it was all about and therefore decided to parade the women of the palace one by one before the sick man: when it was Stranonice's turn, Erasistratus noticed Antiochus' sudden palpitations and thus had his diagnosis of "lovesickness" confirmed. The distinguished healer then decided to ask Seleucus to surrender his young wife to Antiochus, who, thanks to the ruler's affirmative response, was healed.
All four protagonists of the story are present in our painting.
The painter is certainly a Venetian painter of the first half of the 18th century, and in pictorial quality, scene setting, and style, he is certainly a close collaborator with the great master Girolamo Brusaferro. His works can be found in major Venetian churches, but also in Treviso and in major cities in the Veneto region.
