Antique 19th Century Portrait Painting of Boston Gentleman in Period Gilt Frame

About the Item

A sensitive and beautifully painted 19th century portrait of a Boston Gentleman. He is distinctly attired in a black coat with a high collared white shirt. His eyes are large and emotive. Mouth closed but the astute viewer can detect the hint of a smile in those upturned corners of his lips. Hair somewhat tousled. He sits in a curved back upholstered chair. Obviously a fan a good posture. Side note, I LOVE good posture. The picture frame is period and gold gilt. Interestingly there is a label verso on the frame from the venerable art dealer Walter Kimball and Company of Beacon Street in Boston. Another side note, there is a painting by Goya in the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston sold through Walter Kimball and the sitter is in a very similar chair. Whether or not the portrait of the Boston Gentleman started life in the current frame is a mystery. But he's been in there for some time now. The other label verso is on the stretcher. This one is from the well known shop of Richard Nichols on Bloomfield also in Boston. Hence, the Boston Gentleman if you're wondering.
