Antique Framed Charcoal & Watercolor of a Baroque Village by Alfred Martin, Date

About the Item

Antique framed charcoal & watercolor of a baroque village by Alfred Martin, Dated 1914 is a splendid work that features a Flemish village during the Baroque period. Such villages used canals to move merchandise and people around the environs, with connections by canal to nearby settlements which fomented trade. The classic stepped gables and "X" shaped features are hand-forged iron and were designed to be connected to iron rods that traversed the room, building or structure such as a bridge. These reinforcements would help hold the structure together while the masons completed their work and remained in place to add strength to the structure. Brugges is a typical city that employs such canals, and has been called "Venice of the North" for that reason. Note the artist's attention to shadow, perspective, and reflections in the water. Survives in an old lacquered pine frame. Dated 1914. Measures 23 H x 17 W x 1 D.
