About the Item

A superb pair of oil paintings by John James Wilson, (1818-1875) Fisher folk on the beach, each signed by the artist, dating from the third quarter of the 19th Century.. One painting features a group of fisherman in the act of pushing the boat out to sea. A solitary lady is looking at the scene from the shore, two ships are resting near the shore and further ships are in the waters in the background. The figures are small while the artist gives prominence to the stunning landscape itself - a rocky land, the sea that reflects the sunlight splendidly and a delightful war sky. The second painting shows a few fishermen working on the shore, tying the nets etc. Equally to the first painting, there are ships on the shore and in the background. Once again, the colours are magnifying the landscape - for example, the artist cleverly and masterfully used blue and yellow palettes to convey a great sense of delight and peace. The paintings are housed in the original magnificent antique giltwood frames and are ready to be displayed on a special place in your home. The nuances and colours throughout the paintings are extraordinarily presented. Provenance: Purchased Howes Gallery 9th May 1978 and sold together with a copy of the purchase invoice. Dimensions in cm: Height 19 x Width 29 - Painting Height 29 x Width 39 x Depth 3 - Frame Dimensions in inches: Height 7.5 x Width 11.4 - Painting Height 11.4 x Width 15.4 x Depth 1.2 - Frame John James Wilson (c. 1818–1875) was the son of John Wilson who was a Scottish landscape and marine painter. The son exhibited similar works to his father's and from the same London address until 1847. Most were landscapes until 1849 and marines thereafter. He moved to Folkestone with his father in 1853. John James Wilson was a prolific artist, exhibiting more than six hundred paintings during his working life. John James Wilson exhibited at the Royal Academy of Arts (55 paintings), the British Institution (57 paintings), Royal Society of British Artists (384 paintings), the Royal Scottish Academy (106 paintings) Royal Glasgow Institute of the Fine Arts (3 paintings), and the Royal Hibernian Academy (14 paintings). He exhibited his first painting (Cottages near Southampton) at the British Institution in 1834. In 1875, the year of his death, three paintings (The old 'Star' Newington, Kent; On the coast, Etretat, Normandy; Trawler going out-Normandy) were exhibited at the Royal Society of British Artists (RBA) priced at £35, £30 and £50 respectively. These paintings were submitted by his widow. At the age of around 28, the quality of John James Wilson's work was recognised when he was elected a member of the RBA in 1845. Many of his seascapes featured locations around the English Channel. These and his other paintings are still popular and are sold at auction rooms around the UK and elsewhere. Our reference: A1126
