Antique and large Hudson River school Swedish oil on canvas landscape painting depicts mountains, village and trail with figures hiking, attributed to Axel Erdmann, frame signed "A. Erdmann, NY", circa 1900. Measures: 30" H x 36.5" W x .75" D Biography Olof Axel Ferdinand Erdmann Born August 2, 1873 , Stockholm , May 15, 1954 [ 1 ] , was a Swedish visual artist and a public educator. He was the son of the geologist Edvard Erdmann . Erdmann studied at the First Painting School of the Swedish Association of Artists (active 1890-1896) with Richard Bergh , Per Hasselberg , Anders Zorn and Carl Larsson among the teachers, later also in Copenhagen. In 1912-1916 he served the Gothenburg Museum of Painting and Painting, known as Valands Painting School . [ 2 ] In the 1920s he lived in Järvsö in Hälsingland. From this time there are decorations and decorative works in Järvsö , Klövsjö and Ovansjö parishes as well as in the Swedish seamen's church in Antwerp. Someday during this time he seems to have finished as an artist and instead worked as a traveling lecturer in art and homebuilding. [ 3 ] When Erdmann was on his way from a three-month lecture tour in 1931, Ådals events occurred , where demonstrators were shot by Swedish military troops and 5 people were killed. This deeply shook the idealist and Christian minded Erdmann, who decided to personally work to improve the living conditions of the Ådalen workers and help bridge the class contradictions. Erdmann and his wife moved to Kramfors and established a study there in collaboration with ABF , IOGT and NTO . In support of this, he had "The Committee for Supporting Erdmann's Business in the Ådalen". Later, the business became known as the Studiehemmet in Kramfors and was joined to the homestead movement, which hadBirkagården in Stockholm as its main exponent. At Erdmann's time, which lasted until 1940, the business consisted mainly of general education curricula for younger unemployed. After Erdmann retired and moved back to Järvsö, the business continued in Kramfors until 1972. [ 4 ] Erdmann is described in connection with his activities in Kramfors as a charismatic teacher, but there are few traces of him from the time at Valand. In a presentation of Valand's history, he is only mentioned by name in an overview of the school's teacher. [ 2 ] This may be related to his own position as an artist. He is most famous for cityscapes, primarily from Stockholm, Gothenburg and Uppsala painted with impressionistic technology. Stockholms stadshus owns a larger series of his capital cities, among which is especially noted Norrbro and Norrström (1910), [ 5 ] He painted portraits and genres , and acted as a cartoonistand etchers . [ 6 ] His urban images have had an immediate appeal for a bourgeois audience but are artistically less important than either Carl Wilhelmson or the successors, "1909 men" Birger Simonsson , Carl Ryd and Tor Bjurström . That Erdmann quit as an artist can be interpreted as recognizing himself. Axel Erdmann is outside of Stockholm City Hall represented at the National Museum [ 7 ] , Gothenburg Art Museum [ 8 ] and at the Museum in Östersund . [ 9 ]
