Baroque Jesus Painting By Giovanni Battista Gaulli, 17th Century

About the Item

A painting, prior to 1678, from a famous fresco of the Triumph of the Name of Jesus from the Gesù Church in Rome, completed in 1684, attributed to the Old Master Painter Giovanni Battista Gaulli, also known as Baciccio or Baciccia an Italian master of the 17th Century. Gaulli paintings and frescoes are visible at the roman churches of Santa Agnese, Gesù and Santi Apostoli combining Bernini's ecstatic religious style with a masterful use of light and shadow. He was also a portraitist in the papal circle. Many of Gaulli's paintings were studies for frescoes this being identified as a study for the Triumph in the Name of Jesus, a fresco in the Roman church Gesù. Gesù – a single-aisle church, Latin cross plan with side chapels and a dome over the crossing of the nave and transepts – became the archetype of many Catholic churches built in the Baroque period and was the source of the so-called Jesuit style of architecture. On the ceiling of the nave there is a fresco - The Triumph of the Name of Jesus, executed in 1678-79, of which this piece is a preliminary study. Canvas dimmension: 48,2 x 67,5 cm
