About the Item

An excellent amateur oil painting of Buckpasser, the 1966 Horse of the Year. The artist is Anna Whitehead, an Australian amateur equine painter. We love this painting for it’s simplicity. It’s a typical example of equine portraits of the 1960s and 1970s - photorealistic, no interpretation or stylistic nuance, sticking closely to standards of animal show portraiture. It has a deeply appealing directness - no hidden agendas, everything is up front. It’s a real mid-century dazzler. We’ve priced it for it’s decorative appeal above all else. You’ll see in the images that the artist didn’t have a dust-free studio or any temperature control for the curing of the paint. There are fissures in the paint surface and dust, brush bristles and grit embedded in the paint. Our restorer has cleaned the surface, which greatly improved the appearance but not all of the original dust could be removed. The painting has therefore been revarnished in existing condition. See images. While close-ups of the surface might not be very appealing, please remember this was painted by an amateur. However, the overall appearance of the painting on the wall is very appealing. We’ve left the original frame on as it dates to the 1960s. It has a few scuffs. As to the magnificent beast it portrays, Buckpasser was a legendary champion thoroughbred who dominated racing in the late 1960s and was considered by breeders and equine artists at the time to be as close to perfect in physical form as any horse they’d seen. He went on to become the leading thoroughbred broodmare sire of the 1980s (i.e. his daughters produced most of the leading race winners of the 1980s). The painter, Anna Whitehead, an amateur artist working in Perth, Western Australia in the 1960s and 1970s, specialised in equine painting. She produced dozens of works in this style. We wish we could collect them all!

Refinished. Wear consistent with age and use. Minor losses. The surface is fissured by paint shrinkage. We have had the work cleaned and revarnished. It is in bright and stable condition but flaws remain evident on close inspection - embedded dust etc. See images. Original frame, good condition.
