About

Portrait Edward VII King of the United Kingdom and the British Dominions Oil on canvas, cm H 146 x W 104 Cesare Ciani (Florence, February 28, 1854 - Florence, February 13, 1925) was an Italian painter. After completing his studies at the Technical Institute and did his military service until 1878, he enrolled at the Academy of Florence and followed the courses of Giuseppe Ciaranfi and Giovanni Fattori, whose basic philosophy he assimilated, which is expressed in his lively attention towards themes concerning the landscape and the figures that revolve around it. In 1888 he presented the Widow to the Circolo degli Artisti, with whom the following year he obtained a "mention honorable" at the International Exhibition in Paris. He exhibits assiduously to promoters and then to Italian art exhibitions. At the turn of the century, his painting is intensely vitalist, as evidenced by works such as the Interior of Officina dated 1898, which echoes contemporary works by Lovis Corinth, for the interest in workers and machines, or the Villa Bianca on the Island of 'Elba, which belonged to Mario Galli, and which already in the title, expresses the passionate attention to the Mediterranean brightness (reproduced in Pelagatti-Tassi 1962 and Cesare Ciani 1978). In 1922, presented by Mario Tinti, he participated in the Florentine Spring with a large number of works, including: Sick Child, Women of the People, Market; exemplars of the artist's poetics that since the early twentieth century has established itself on rural and popular subjects. Themes consonant, however, with the painting of the so-called post-Macchiaioli, of which by habitual criticism Ciani is also a part. With the particularity on the part of this artist, however, to consider them with expressionistic intentions, and treats with a poor drafting and a palette of browns, purples, rotting greens, occasionally lit with touches of dazzling red and whites. He portrays scenes of everyday life that take place in the crowded and noisy Florentine district of Borgo San Frediano, in via de 'Serragli. Painter with an abundant artistic production, he enjoys a good market, mainly among Tuscan, Lombard and Emilian collectors; also in consideration of the fact that he is one of the few Florentines who belong to the circle of the Post-Macchiaioli. In 1927, two years after his death, Mario Tinti and Llewelyn Lloyd organized an important retrospective with one hundred and eighty works.
