About the Item

Harry Newman's Derelict cottages, Stagsden 1986 Watercolour, ink, crayon, gouache Signed lower right : Clifford Knight 1986 label verso : Ghosts & Silent Witness Exhibition, Northampton, no 20 In the original gilded frame length 92.5cm., 36 1/2" height 74.4cm., 29.33" The artist ingeniously uses a rich palette to bring the cottage back to life and create a romantic atmosphere drawing the viewer in. Stagsden is a small historic village in Bedfordshire. Village Farm used to be owned by Harry Newman, who had a metal peg leg. He took on lots of legal battles for himself and other people using his vast library. He conducted all of these battles himself before he died some time ago. CLIFFORD KNIGHT (b.1958) Clifford Knight was born in Ilford in 1958 and was educated at Moulsham High School in Chelmsford, Essex. At the age of 16 he went to study art at the Colchester Institute. After leaving college he went on to work for Marconi Communications as a silk screen printer. After a few years, he left Marconi to become a Graphic Artist but remained in the silk screen industry.mmClifford moved to Norfolk in 1989 with his wife and two children and decided to embark on a new career as a full time painter; he has never looked back since. Although a keen water-colourist, he also paints in oils and has exhibited his work with the Great Yarmouth and District Society of Artists, in London and many leading Norfolk galleries. Clifford mainly paints landscapes and has a deep affection for the Norfolk countryside with its rich waterways, coastal views and old tradition farmyards.
