About the Item

This masterpiece by Dutch painter Jan van Bjjlert (1597/98-1671 ) is listed in the Catalogue Raisonné (1998) under no. 68 by Docteur Paul Huys Jansseen, the world re-known expert on Jan van Bijlert. Dr. Huys Jansseen performed an in person examination and study of this painting in Paris on February 27th 2006 and confirmed its attribution to Jan van Bijlert. This marvelous work of art comes from the former collection of Barons Lazzaroni (Italy) and this name remains engraved on the identifying metal plaque on the front of the frame. The frame itself is a work of art as well- a bold, gilded carved wood with incredible craftsmanship, believed to have been commissioned by the Baron in the 1800's for this painting. Several European art experts of this period have said that this painting is the premiere masterpiece of Jan Van Bijlert. Jan van Bijlert arrived in Italy a few years after the death of Caravaggio. Following his return to his hometown of Antwerp in 1624, his art found a balance between Caravaggism, Dutch realism and a nascent Classicism. His figures are slightly more sophisticated than those encountered in compositions by other Northern Caravaggesque painters such as Gerrit van Hontorst or Hendrik Ter Brugghen. The colors in his works, and especially in the present painting, are also less dramatic and call the Bolonese school rather than Caravaggio. The allegory of the five senses was a popular theme amongst 17th century French and Flemish painters such as Jacques Linard, David Teniers, Louis Finson and Theodoor Rombouts. Dr. Huys Janssen noted that the figure of Taste in the present composition reprises, in reverse, a figure in "Lot and his daughters" by Dirck van Baburen. This painting is a larger autograph version of a signed painting in the Niederlandishe Landesmuseum, Hannover, dated by Paul Huys Janssen to circa 1626-1630. There is a copy of the painting in the Jewett Art Center, Wellesley College, Massachusetts. This vast work of art hung on the wall of a famous Parisian restaurant for decades till it was passed on to the family heir who has kept it as a much loved painting for many years.
