About the Item

An important and unconventional member of the Boston Figurative Expressionists, Pauline “Polly” Doyle, painter and printmaker, was born in Bar Harbor, Maine. She attended the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston during the early 1950s, at a particularly fertile and experimental moment among these core group of students and professors which ultimately led to the creation of a wholly new American abstract style. An influx of German and European Jewish refugees had immigrated to Boston in the 1930s, many of them teachers and academics, and began to predispose the City’s traditionally staid sensibilities from the bucolic placidity of Impressionism towards the “degenerate” art of the European modernists. The German born Karl Zerbe, who taught at the Museum School from 1937-1955, had an enormous influence on students during his tenure there. In the city’s art district along Newbury Street, the Boris Minski and Alpha Galleries were at the forefront of the city’s Avante Garde scene, a sanctum for young artists and jazz musicians of the 1940s. Among the common elements of this new Figurative Abstract style was the use of bold colors and an often exaggerated and broadly looping, gesticular type of brushwork. Much of this can be traced to the manner of the French Fauvists or “wild beasts”, of the early 20th century particularly Henri Matisse, who many of the group admired above all others. Vincent van Gogh and Edward Munch were also hugely influential. In this work, dating to the 1960s, Doyle explores a recurring figure in her work from this period, which she referred to as an “Elder”, depicted in an almost tribal face paint and regalia communing with the disembodied heads of various figures from antiquity. She frequently referenced the various states of human existence as well as the milestones of a human life during this introspective period of her career. It is presented here in a period “Heydenryk” style carved frame chosen by the artist herself.
