Edward Masters, farmyard scene, oil on canvas, dated 1878,
Dimensions: Image: 18" x 10", framed 22" x 14".
Little is known about his life, but he painted naive farmyard and village scenes. His work is sometimes attributed to William Shayer, who painted similar subjects, and also the works of Georgina Lara, with whom his work has a very striking resemblance.
Masters’ work can often be recognized because of his tendency to put large numbers of small figures into his canvases. Masters painted prolifically in a delightfully personal style.
His charming compositions and warm coloring contribute to the artist’s popularity with art collectors worldwide.
His popularity as a painter flourished between 1869 and 1875, exhibiting at the Royal Society of British Artists in 1869.
