END OF THE 18th CENTURY PORTRAIT OF COUNT LUDOVICO CAPRARA

About the Item

Splendid oil portrait on canvas of Count Bailiff Ludovico Caprara (1731-1812), as indicated by the writing inside the "tabula ansata," at the bottom of the frame of the painting. The tabula ansata also depicts the family coat of arms and the Latin motto "nosce te ipsum" (trans. "know thyself"). Ludovico Caprara, son of Countess Maria Vittoria Caprara and Count Marquis Francesco Raimondo Montecuccoli, was a knight of the order of Malta, as also indicated in the painting, by the cross he wears around his neck and woven onto his jacket. Within the order, he held the role of Bailiff of Armenia. The portrait, full of realism and finely detailed, portrays him with his gaze directed toward the viewer, in clothes and a wig typical of the time. Finally, in his right hand he holds the staff, a symbol of his nobility. The work, probably attributable to a Bolognese artist of the late 18th century, certainly exudes history and elegance. The pictorial part is in excellent condition, as the restoration has already been carried out. The frame, however, requires restoration and the price includes the restoration of the corners. The frame, in carved and gilded wood, is contemporary with the painting. Measurements: H x W x D overall 93 x 67 x 5cm; H x W work only 73 x 55cm
