About the Item

"Portrait of Napoleon Bonaparte Reaching out to the Grenadiers of the Guard Astride His Favorite Horse Marengo" painted by Edouard Brun, circa 1930 after the original 1803 painting by Antoine-Jean Gros in the Musee national Chateaux de Malmaison et de Bois-Preau France. 310 x 240 (10'2" x 7'10") oil on canvas with the original wood and gesso frame with egg and dart decoration finished in hand laid burnished gold leaf. The painting is said to have been commissioned by Countess Waldenberg in the late 1920s for her Chateaux in Beiren. She died before the completion of the painting and thus the painting was never hung in Beiren but went to the French government archive to be used for decoration for government property. Sold in a "Garde Meuble" auction of the French State more than 40 years ago, it found its way to the "Stads Palais" of a Belgian collector thru a Parisian Antiquair and has been in this private collection for more than 20 years. During this time it was loaned for exhibition to The Palais op De Meir, which was Napoleon's Palais in Antwerp Belgium (photo #2 with model in front of the painting was taken during the Palais exhibition) Currently the painting is in climate controlled storage in Antwerp, Belgium ( 3rd photo on its side is the painting in storage) -Signed bottom right "E.Brun" photo #9 -Back stretcher is marked in pencil: "Brun artiste peintre à Orgerus (Seine st Oise) photo #8 - The same stretcher bears remnants of the paper label from the French government archive. Conservations and restorations: -Backside of the total canvas has been impregnated with archival wax for stability photo #4 -Canvas repair (photo #18 area of sky left of Napoleon's head) -Repair of approximately 70 cm (photos #5, #6) -Overall small retouches.
