Presenting a fabulous late 20th century piece of original Irish Art by the Late Reverend J.H. Flack of Athy, Co. Kildare, a renowned, listed, exhibited and respected Irish watercolorist. circa 2000. “Snow on the Bog” – depicts a winter scene in the Irish Midlands, famous for the largest Bog in Europe, The Bog of Allen. Framed, matted and under glass. The painting is signed but the signature is just under the matte. It beautifully captures a blanket of snow over the wet flat and sparsely vegetated boglands, with the reeds and rushes protruding from the snow and the bog holes still visible in the blanket of snow. Most likely a really good gallery copy of Orpen’s portrait of Lady Evelyn Herbert. Portrait of Lady Evelyn Herbert after Sir William Orpen (1871-1931). Oil on canvas. The sitter was the daughter of Lord Carnarvon who discovered Tutankhamen's tomb and she was one of the first to enter the tomb in 1922. She was the first woman to do so. This painting was exhibited in the same Gallery as the Roscommon Dragoon by Orpen, also in this category……namely the Ballyrickart Gallery of Irish Art in Ireland. Oil on canvas……signature on back (not authenticated). Details of painter on the back with "Certificate of Authenticity" from the ‘National Fine Arts Title Registry’ which we do not feel confident supporting as genuine. Beautifully framed. It was purchased by a Private Dallas Collector at Sotheby’s New York Auction on 20th September 2005. Sale No: 8111 Lot No. 223. Sotheby’s operate a twice yearly auction of Southeast Asian Art & Antiquities in New York in the months of March and September. This sale was titled “Indian and Southeast Asian Art”. The Lot is described as: “C.J. Anthony Doss (b. 1933) THE TEMPTATION. Signed and dated ‘C J A Doss/57’ lower right. Oil on canvas laid on board. 27.5 by 20.5 in (69.9 by 52 cm.) The Provenance is given as: “Property from the Collection of Mr. Artur Isenberg”. The painting carried an Auction estimate of USD 2,000 to USD 4,000. Allowing for inflation alone this would be over $6,000 in today’s value. As an added bonus and proof of authenticity the painting still retains it’s original Sotheby’s Lot No. Label. It has substantially increased in value over the years as a HIGHLY DESIRABLE piece from an exhibited and highly collected Modern Indian Master painter. C.J. Anthony Doss is a very highly regarded and widely exhibited, Indian painter. He was born in 1933 and died in 2008. DAG Modern in Mumbai featured Doss’s work. An autumnal scene with classic "viktualienmarkt" that looks so much like the Munich Altstadt but is almost surely the park alongside the Prussian Charlottenburg Palace in Berlin. This is a very charming and beautiful painting. The Charlottenburg area was the seat of the Berlin Secessionist school of German progressive artists that espoused modern art, especially impressionism and expressionism.
