About the Item

True to the generally optimistic nature of Marcke’s work, the present example is a bright and vibrant scene capturing the simple life of a peasant farmer in the countryside. Under clear sunny skies, the farmer brings his herd of sheep and cattle in from the fields at the end of the day. The well trod path doesn’t stop a few sheep from pausing to eat outgrowth while waiting for the other animals to catch up - rugged fencing outlines plots, clearly completed on a budget with sticks laying about the farm. Flat fields stretch well into the blurred distance where a stretch of forest is visible before the shaded hills. The high-chroma pallette is cheery and suggestive of spring. We recently had the work cleaned by our conservator and it is ready to be presented in the home. Emil van Marcke (French, 1827-90) was renowned for his nostalgic pastoral landscape scenes, born at Sevres, Hauts-de-Seine in France. From a line of Belgian artisans, he was surrounded by art as a child, influenced and raised by the works of both his grandfather Charles van Marcke (Belgium, 1773-1830) and father Jean-Baptiste Marcke (1797-1848). Charles was an accomplished artist specializing in porcelain work as well as wonderful pastoral landscapes; his eldest son, Jean-Baptiste, worked as an artist at the Sevres factory (Manufacture de Sevres) starting in 1825. Emil studied drawing and art as a child, starting his work professionally at the Sevres factory, working there until 1862 before success of his works allowed him to focus on this more entirely. Exhibiting for the first time at the Paris Salon in 1857, from that year forward the Salon was never without one of his works. He was awarded medals in 1867, 1869 and 1870, and was appointed Chevalier of the Legion of Honour in 1872. At the Universal Exhibition of 1878 he received a medal of the first class.
