An Arab Fisherman occupies the central figure in this marvelous watercolor painting by Reuven Rubin. Dressed in a typical Arabic local costume painted in vivd colors, the fisherman spreads his arms to showcase the catch of fish as they still hang from the hook, while a bucket containing additional fish hangs under his arm.
Fishermen, much like olive trees and sheep, populate the work of Romanian-born Israeli artist Reuven Rubin. His biblically-inspired landscape works were produced over a six-decade career spent living between Tel Aviv, New York, and Los Angeles. Considered a pioneering figurative Israeli artist of the mid-20th century and a founder of the Eretz-Yisrael style alongside artists Nachum Gutman and Ziona Tajar, his work is often compared to that of Marc Chagall. Rubin is celebrated for his portraits and sun-bleached modernist landscapes of the 1920s and 1930s, which were exhibited at the 1952 Venice Biennale and have entered the collections of the Museum of Modern Art, the Jewish Museum, and the Israel Museum.
