Frederick Carl Smith, portrait study/copy Vermeer's Lacemaker
About the Item
Frederick Carl Smith (1868-1955)
American Artist
This lovely work is Smith's 19th century copy (from 1898) of the Jan Vermeer masterpiece, "The Lacemaker."
According to the label on the back (see detail shot), he copied it while in Paris, at the Louvre Museum.
Smith is an accomplished, early California painter. He is especially appreciated for his California landscapes (like views of Lake Tahoe or Laguna), and American Indian scenes. Smith studied at the Cincinnati Art Academy; Académie Julian, Paris with Bouguereau, Ferrier, Constant. While in Paris he practiced the venerable practice of copying masterworks hanging in museums – which is the genesis of the current study of a Vermeer masterpiece. According to online sources, Smith exhibited at the Paris Salon, 1897, 1899; National Academy of Design, 1900; Society of Washington Artists; Washington Watercolor Club; American Art Society, Philadelphia, 1902; Los Angeles County Museum of Art; Corcoran Gallery Annual, 1908; Society of Independent Artists, 1917; Southwest Museum, Los Angeles, 1921 (prize). His work can be found in the collections of the Frederick R Weisman Art Museum; Public Library, Minneapolis, MN; Continental Hall, Washington, DC; Allegheny (PA) Observatory; State Capitol, Denver; State Capitol, Columbus, OH
