French Cavalry Franco-Prussian War Oil Painting Circa 1880
About the Item
Oil painting by Wilfrid Constant Beauquesne (1847-1913) depicting the French cavalry in the street of Saint-Privat following the battle held outside the town during the Franco-Prussian War of 1870. It shows a dismounted officer in lower right, wounded soldiers on left, and members of the cavalry speeding down the street. A fine example of Beauquesne's work mounted in its original period frame, a masterful example of carved and gilt gesso on wood, with nameplate with the artist's name and SAINT-PRIVAT.
Canvas 21.75 by 25.75 inches, frame 34.5 by 38.5 by 4.5 inches.
Born in Rennes, the artist is widely collected and admired for his depictions of important and imagined events from the Franco-Prussian war and other subjects as well. He studied with Horace Vernet and Emile Vernet-Lecomte at Ecole des Beaux-Arts, two artists renowned for their depictions of military subjects. Beauquesne exhibited at the Paris Salon from 1887 to 1899 and across Europe as well. His artwork can be found in the collection of the Citadel at the Belfort Museums, the Musee de l'Armee in Paris, and the John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art in Sarasota, Florida.

- Condition:Repaired: Surface has craquelure and some minor inpainting. Ornate frame has scatterer losses to the gilt/carved gessos plus scuffs, scratches and nicks, and surface dust. Wear consistent with age and use. Minor losses.
