French Limoges Porcelain decorative dish from Tressemann & Vogt - France XIXème

About the Item

Very beautiful large plate, decorative dish in good quality porcelain with polychrome painted decoration of a final scene from Charles Perrault's famous tale Puss in Boots, written at the end of the 17th century. The colors are bright and the scene is very finely illustrated by hand. It has a golden edging all around. This dish is a real painting on porcelain. A green T&V Limoges France stamp is on the reverse of the dish. This large decorative dish is therefore a Production of the Limoges porcelain factory Tressemanes et Vogt, this green T&V stamp was used from 1892 to 1907. The dish is sold with its wall mount. Gustave Vogt (1849-1937), from a family of porcelain makers and importers, took over the Limoges office in 1870 that his ancestor had acquired in 1850. He joined forces with Tressemann Emilien in the early 1880s. In 1891, they bought two small porcelain factories, in the suburb of Montjovis, in Limoges in France. Their production of quality earthenware is intended for export to the United States, distributed by their New York office. Tressemann retired in 1907. This allows us to date this large plate to the years 1895/1900. The Master Cat or Puss in Boots, in Italian “Il gatto maestro o il gatto con gli stivali”; in German: "Der Meisterkater oder der Kater in Stiefeln", or "Der gestiefelte Kater"; in English: "The Master Cat, or the Booted Cat or Puss in Boots"; in Spanish: "Maese Gato o el gato con botas", is a French-Italian prose tale telling the story of a cat who uses trickery and cheating to offer power, fortune and the hand of a princess to his ill-born and penniless master. The Italian author Giovanni Francesco Straparola seems to have transcribed the oldest known version of this story in his book Les Nuits facetieuses. The classic version of this tale was written at the end of the 17th century by Charles Perrault (1628-1703). It comes from an illustrated manuscript, entitled Les Contes de ma Mère l'Oye and dated 1695, two years before the publication of Perrault's collection of eight tales Histoires ou contes du temps passé, avec des morales by Barbin in 1697. Puss in Boots was an instant success and remains very popular today.
