About the Item

Gambrinus, allegory of beer, large oil painting on canvas, late 19th century, unsigned, measures 140x245 cm. Gambrinus is depicted as a king and has passed into legend as the one who added hops to the traditional beer recipe. The origin of the character is mainly attributed to the figure of Fearless John, believed by some to be the inventor of beer with malt and hops. Other sources report that one of the cupbearers in Charlemagne's court was named Gambrinus. In 1543, the German poet Burkart Waldis mentioned this character, explaining that he had learned the art of brewing from Isis, the ancient Egyptian goddess of motherhood and fertility. There are several hypotheses about the etymology of the name: it could derive from the Latin word cambarus (cellarer, cellar attendant) or from ganeae birrinus (one who drinks in a tavern), or it would be a mispronunciation of the name Jan Primus, referring to Duke John I of Brabant. Other hypotheses would also make Gambrinus derive from a transcription error of the name "Gambrivius" or from the Celtic word camba, meaning the pot where beer is brewed. Because of the strong connection with the blond alcoholic beverage, the name and figure of Gambrinus appear in many European and North American beer brands. Among them, Gambrinus, brewed by the Czech brewery Plzeňský Prazdroj near the city of Plzeň, being the official sponsor of the Czech soccer league, has for publicity reasons caused the tournament to be named Gambrinus Liga.

Wear consistent with age and use. The painting is in good state of preservation; it has very small color deficiencies due to age, but they do not affect with the usability of the painting. It has not recently undergone restoration. It features a thin frame to hold the canvas.
