Gerard I Hoet, Bacchanal - Oil on Board, 17th Century
About the Item
Gerard I Hoet (attributed)
(1648 – 1733)
Bacchanale
Oil on panel, 68×53.5 cm
Within gilded and carved wooden frame
The painting, an oil on panel in overall very good condition, depicts a bacchanal scene with a dance of satyrs, putti, and maidens in disheveled attire.
Seated in the lower right corner an old Bacchus, with a large shell at his side, follows the scene while holding up his right arm. The whole is set within a pleasant landscape with two tall, leafy trees dominating the central part of the panel and ideally dividing the right side of the work-a simple rocky background-from the left side, which is richer and brighter with a clear landscape of green valleys and mountains in the background.
The work can rightly be attributed to the Flemish painter Gerard I Hoet (not to be confused with his son, Gerard II), son of Moses Hoet, a stained-glass decorator who was also his first teacher.
Initially assisting his father in his profession, he later became a student, of Warnard van Rysen.
In 1672, due to the seizure of Zaltbommel by the French, he moved to The Hague where he worked on decorating salons and ceilings in some of the city's major hotels, and later moved to Amsterdam and Paris.
After a year, he returned to North Holland and settled in Utrecht, invited there by M.van Zuylen, a leading patron of the period, for whom he performed some of his best works.
In this city, in 1697, he founded together with Hendrick Schoock a drawing academy, of which he was director.
Hoet followed large paintings, often with many figures, in a classical and elegant style but produced mainly works of religious, mythological or classical subjects, usually of small format, having landscapes in the style of Cornelis van Poelenburch as a background.
It is precisely in the vein of the latter type of work that the work presented here fits perfectly, a work pleasing in subject matter, quality and size and worthy of primary collection.
