Hans Burkhardt Signed Swiss California Original Midcentury Abstract Painting
By Hans Burkhardt
Located in Studio City, CA
A wonderful, highly engaging large original abstract female nude pastel painting/drawing by Swiss/ American/ Californian painter-artist Hans Burkhardt. This work, titled "Seated Female" is hand-signed and dated (1958) by the artist. An original, one-of-a-kind, and unusually large work by Burkhardt. Would be the crown jewel to any collection of his work or a stunning stand-alone art accent piece in about any setting. His earlier abstract female forms are becoming rare and harder to find. Hans Burkhardt was born in 1904 in Basel, Switzerland. At the age of 20, he immigrated to New York to work with his father. From 1925 to 1928 he attended the Cooper Union School of the Arts, where he befriended mentor Arshile Gorky and Willem de Kooning—sharing Gorky's studio from 1928 to 1937. In 1937 he moved to Los Angeles, California. Burkhardt held his first solo exhibition in 1939 at Stendahl Gallery in Los Angeles. In 1945 he had a highly acclaimed solo exhibition at the Los Angeles County Museum. Burkhardt spent most of the 1950s working in Mexico. Art critics of the time considered him a "great Mexican master” alongside Orozco, Rivera, and Siqueiros, and Rufino Tamayo admired his work. He returned to Los Angeles in the 1960s to create some of the most powerful examples of Abstract Expressionism of the time. During this time he also became well known for his richly drawn pastel abstractions of the human figure of which this original work certainly qualifies. He died in Los Angeles in 1994. Burkhardt's solo shows include: 1939: Stendahl Gallery, Los Angeles, March 27 – April 17 1945: Hans Burkhardt, Los Angeles County Museum of Art 1951: Museo de Bellas Artes, Guadalajara, Mexico: Exhibicion de Pinturas Modernas; Comara Gallery, Los Angeles 1953: Fisher Gallery, University of Southern California, Los Angeles 1957: Pasadena Art Museum, California: Ten Year Retrospective, June 14 – July 14; 1961-62: Thirty Year Retrospective (traveled to Santa Barbara Museum of Art, April 11 – May 7, 1961, Los Angeles Municipal Art Gallery, January 9 – February 4, 1962, Legion of Honor (museum), San Francisco, June 10 – July 9, 1962) 1968: San Diego Museum of Art: Vietnam Paintings...

Large Lee Reynolds Style Mid-Century Modern Cityscape Skyline Painting
By Lee Reynolds
Located in Chattanooga, TN
Rendered in compelling impasto, this expansive cityscape painting summons the grandeur of the skyline in rich earth tones tempered by washes of green—a modernist meditation on urban form and reflection. The canvas vividly layers skyscraper silhouettes in brown against a vast cream sky strewn with cloudlike softly flushed motifs. Below, the mirrored cityscape shifts subtly across a muted green and beige harbor, each stroke orchestrating a poetic play between structure and water. Measuring approximately 60.75 inches wide, 39.88 inches tall, and 1.65 inches deep, the painting's scale commands space with grace—a monumental presence ideal for open wall expanses or interiors seeking architectural drama through nuanced abstraction. Painted with deliberate texture and depth, the building forms emerge through expressive, tactile brushwork, their verticality grounded by the diffuse reflection below. The artist’s signature, rendered in inscrutable script, hovers discreetly, adding provenance without distracting from the broader visual sweep. Framed in a sleek black surround with a subtle metallic inlay, the presentation emphasizes the painting’s emotive geometry while maintaining structural restraint. Gentle surface wear and minor frame imperfections hint at its vintage lineage—adding authenticity, not detracting from its impact. Extraordinary Mid-Century Modern cityscape painting...

Mid-Century Modern Aqua Blue White and Green Nautical Harbor Painting
By Lee Reynolds
Located in Chattanooga, TN
Energized by light and motion, this vibrant mid-century modern harbor scene—signed “LeMark”—rises from the palette in luminous aqua blues, leafy greens, sunny yellows, and crisp whites. It captures a sailboat drifting beneath a sweeping bridge, its white skyscraper backdrop and urban setting subtly evoking iconic waterfront skylines such as Chicago’s or a coastal dreamscape anywhere from Miami to Fort Lauderdale. Broad, painterly strokes—lifted from abstract expressionist technique—imbue the work with kinetic energy and coastal serenity. Framed and restored to gallery-ready condition, the piece retains a fresh white-painted frame and is wired for immediate hanging. Its dimensions are approximately 37 inches square and 1 inch deep, offering commanding presence without overpowering its surroundings. The painting stands in excellent vintage condition, with bold color saturation and dynamic brushwork intact. The frame’s fresh finish complements the composition while honoring its expressive immediacy. Mid-Century Modern harbor painting signed, “LeMark.” The painting deviates from others of the period with it’s bright aqua blue, yellow, green and white palette. Earth tones are abundant in Mid-Century Modern paintings. Here we have something light and bright to illuminate your space. The harbor scene is rendered with broad, painterly strokes. These dynamic brush marks are borrowed from the Abstract Expressionist aesthetic prevalent at the time. This painting will be right at home in coastal locations with it’s sailboat set...
