About the Item
Gorgeous figural acrylic on canvas painting of a young woman by Gino Hollander (1924- 2015), an important artist in the 1970s abstract expressionist movement centered in New York City.
In the 1950s, Hollander was a successful filmmaker along with his wife, Barbara Hollander, before beginning to paint in 1960. He and a group of artist friends who frequented the Cedar Tavern came to define the abstract expressionist movement.
Acrylic paint was just emerging at that time, and Hollander was among the first to explore its possibilities. From his studio and first Hollander Gallery on Bleecker Street in Greenwich Village, his paintings sold to Jacqueline Kennedy, Steve McQueen, Norma Rockwell, and Ralph Lauren, among others.

Gino Hollander
Born in 1924 in Newark, NJ, Gino Hollander attended Rutgers University before serving in the U.S. Army’s Mountain Division Ski Troop during World War II. Hollander had a successful career as a documentary filmmaker throughout the 1950s. In 1960, he decided to focus on painting after becoming friends with Abstract Expressionist painters at the Cedar Tavern. He died at the age of 91 in 2015 in Newport Beach, CA.
