Giovanni Crivelli known as Crivellino; Hunting scene, oil on canvas

About the Item

Description Giovanni Crivelli known as the Crivellino Milan - Parma 1760 Hunting Scene Oil on canvas cm 109x115 The work shows a hunting dog next to abundant game shot, including ducks, pheasants, a heron, and other birds. The painting enhances the richness of the prey, the muscular tension of the dog, and the naturalism of the lifeless bodies. The scene is full of movement, contrasting light and shadows, and a dramatic yet decorative composition, as befits eighteenth-century painting. Hunting still lifes were very popular in the Flemish area, and Crivelli echoes their theatrical composition and taste for naturalistic detail. Brushstrokes are visible and bold, with strong use of chiaroscuro and attention to the rendering of feathers and textures. Giovanni Crivelli worked in the first half of the 18th century, mainly between Milan and Parma. He was known for his hunting scenes and still lifes with animals, often commissioned by noble courts. The scene represents not only a hunting interest, but also a display of luxury and aristocratic power. Painting signed at lower right.
