About the Item

Goya oil on canvas from xviii century The canvas is relined. It is from the same time that Goya made the cartons. The painting measures: 135 x 101 cm without frame. The dutch frame measures: 172 x 140 cm -The blind chicken (1789) is one of the cartoons that served as a model for the manufactures of the Royal Tapestry Factory of Santa Bárbara by Francisco de Goya and was intended for the decoration of the bedroom of the infantas of the Palace of El Pardo and was carried out shortly after King Carlos IV acceded to the throne of Spain. This is the fourth series of cartoons that Goya made between 1788 and 1792, dedicated to leisure and country fun. A previous sketch of this cardboard is preserved in the Prado Museum. This painting shows boys playing the popular pastime of "blind man's hen", with a blindfolded character in the center trying to tempt the others, who are dancing in a circle, with a large spoon. The young people are dressed as majos and majas, attire from the humble layers of Spanish society with which the aristocrats (like the ones in this painting) liked to dress. Some others, with velvet jackets and feather headdresses, instead follow the dictates of the fashion of the upper classes coming from France. The composition is resolved by alternating the characters between the gaps left by those in the foreground and background, and contrasting the young man who crouches to the right to avoid the ladle with which he tries to touch him and the woman leaning backwards with another young man who it does it forward. The painting is a decanted exponent of the gallant or Rococo style, and its characteristic style traits: liveliness, immediacy, curiosity, soft rose colors, chiffon textures on the women's skirts, a luminous background landscape and the reflection of a charming moment of enjoyment of life not without flirtation possibilities.
