Hand Painted Watercolor Portrait of a Little Girl England Mid-19th Century
About the Item
A small, mid-19th-century English School watercolor portrait of a young girl with her hair in perfect curls and wearing a plaid dress.
She has a serious look appropriate for standing still while this important portrait is painted.
Her expression of quiet contemplation lends a sense of depth and complexity to the portrait.
The ground at her feet is lightly sketched with a flower on the right side of the painting.
The painting is framed in the original period maple frame with an inner edge of parcel gilt, which is somewhat worn.
This portrait can be dated to the 1840s since, beginning in the 1850's watercolor portrait paintings were primarily replaced by photographic images. As a result, portraits like this have become a unique representation of a bygone era.
Dimensions: 12.5 height x 10.5" wide x 1.5" deep.
Condition: Good. There is slight fading to the image and the gilded frame.
