Rare watercolor study of two fishermen examining a large fishing net in the harbour. Inscribed ‘rough sketch for poster’ & signed H G Gawthorn in pencil. With a pencil sketch of one of the fishermen on the reverse
Reputedly Newlyn. probably artwork for GWR, Great Western Railway for a poster advertising travel to Cornwall.
In an oak frame. The reverse sketch also mounted and glazed.
Gawthorn, Henry George
Born in Northampton in 1879 and died 1941. Studied at the Heatherley School and Regent Street Polytechnic. He began his career in an architect’s office before turning to painting. His work encompassed both Fine and commercial art; he exhibited at the Royal Academy and with the Society of Graphic Art and was one of the leading travel artists working on poster commissions for railway companies.
