About the Item

This vivid Florida waterscape is the work of Highwayman George Buckner (1943-2002). It features an inflamed pink sky above which is reflected in the Indian river. A flock of egrets, a lone royal palm tree, a vivid stand of mangroves, and a cypress tree are draped in Spanish moss. The painting is acrylic on Masonite, and is set in the original homemade frame constructed of crown molding. Mr. Buckner grew up in Gifford, Florida. He was the eldest son of 12 children. He left school in the sixth grade when his father died and he went to work. He was a tall and handsome man. Aside from being a gifted painter, he was a self taught and accomplished musician. He played the guitar, piano, and saxophone. Bucker became a "Highwayman" after meeting the group's founder Harold Newton while working on an orange grove farm. The "Highwaymen" were a group of outdoor artists, all African-American. In the 50s and 60s, it was impossible to find galleries interested in selling artworks by a group of unknown, self-taught African-Americans. Instead, they sold their art directly to the public, often on Florida's highways. The Florida Highwaymen were influenced by renowned landscape artist A.E. Backus during the 1950s-80s. Some in the formal art world have given this group and its followers the name "Indian River School," but they are most well-known as The Highwaymen. Buckner was by far the most deliberate of the artists in the group and considered one of the best. For much of his life, he mowed lawns for a living. Most of his friends and family were not even aware that he painted at all. Even after the Highwaymen's art began to grow in popularity and exposure, he was still mowing lawns. When asked why he continued this profession instead of painting, he said that he liked to be outdoors.
