Abstract 9 square matrix collage by James Grant (1924-1997, born in Los Angeles) signed and dated lower right, 1995. Encaustic and oil mixed-media abstraction cut and reorganized into nine quad matrix. Ochre/turquoise diagonal split field center right. Taking a fresh approach to abstract expressionism, Grant literally destroys his compositions-cutting them up into small squares and collaborating with chance on new works based on the relationship of fragments from larger gestures. Grant literally deconstructs and recombines the pictorial narrative still imbedded in the abstract expressionist myth of action and material. Grant teases out a dynamic dialectic between the ledger's grid which crops tactile surfaces into fragmentary views of what was once a larger composition but is now the visual application of literary cut and paste as seen in the literary work of William Burroughs. At a fundamental level we witness the repurposing of art vis-vis-vis it's breakdown into modern cells as found in todays omnipresent world of computer programs like Excel and Dreamweaver which are based upon the relationship of adjacent text/image boxes that can be related through mathematical operations as simple as a sum to more complicated algorithmic relationship formulas. Grant has, in this sense, anticipated our modern software world by incorporating it's spreadsheet logic into his artistic process. At the same time, Grant has adopted, in a novel and innovative fashion, a classic 20th century idea of the postmodern composition of collage and chance and breathed life into what had become a formulaic language of abstract expressionism as a singular event. Artist Biography: A painter and sculptor, James Grant (1924-1997) was born in Los Angeles and died in Stinson Beach. He was active from the 1950s into the early nineties. Best known for his sculptural work in plastics and abstract paintings, Grant also explored collages and bas-reliefs. USC degree in Engineering; M.F.A. at the Jepson Art Institute in Los Angeles under Rico Lebrun; Assistant Professor of Art for nine years at Pomona College in Claremont, CA in the fifties where he worked with Frederick Hammersley, Karl Benjamin, Peter Selz and Seymour Slive. Solo exhibitions: Pasadena Art Museum, Pomona College; U.C. Riverside; Galleria Pogliani in Rome; M.H. de Young Memorial Museum in San Francisco, 1963; a retrospective at Mills College in Oakland In 1970 traced his transition from abstract canvases to collages to bas-reliefs and finally to sculpture. Group exhibitions: Los Angeles County Museum, the Oakland Art Museum: San Francisco Museum of Art. Several commissioned works in the seventies incorporating plastic and glass. In 1962, Grant returned to the United States from a two-year stay in Rome and settled in San Francisco where he continued his work with Collage. During the sixties he showed at the Hansen Gallery in the Bay Area and the Bertha Schaefer Gallery and Grand Central Moderns in New York. His collages began to include polyester resin that he also cast into large reliefs and his widely recognized sculptures of high polish geometric disks and tall spikes. The eighties and nineties marked a return to painting with the production of small watercolors cut into squares and reassembled into grids. This format was taken to a larger scale with acrylic painting on canvases that were cut into squares and reassembled in works ranging from four to eight feet.

American Colorist Landscape Painting “Lake Shore” by Frederic M. Grant

A vibrant landscape that blends the lines of genre work with the impressionist landscape, it captures a pair of woman caught in the middle of a conversation while a young child is exploring the path barefoot. The traditional dress is reminiscent of a century prior and is evocative of a rural Italian landscape, though the stretchers on the reverse of the painting are simply titled "Lake Shore" with no recorded indication of the placement of the scene. The brilliant cobalt blue of the lake is visible to the far right of the nearly square composition while the trees stretch like spires through the horizon and beyond the scope of the canvas, proportionally dwarfing even the cliffs in the distance behind the women. It is a composition familiar to Grant, with his preference for framing subjects with towering local trees, utilizing a relatively square canvas and including just a hint of water. In this particular example, the interplay of light and shadow in the scene is positively brilliant with Grant's palette switching from high-chroma to low-saturation within the span of a single brushstroke. The scene is signed in the lower right in his typical script, "Frederic M. Grant" and is housed in a good quality period correct carved giltwood frame.
