Jan Stussy “Parachute Jump Series No. 12”, Expressionist Acrylic Painting, 1980s

About the Item

An early 1980s large expressionist acrylic painting on masonite titled “Parachute Jump Series No. 12” by notable and important California artist, Academy Award-winning film producer, and UCLA professor Jan Stussy (b. 1921–1990). Loosely rendered falling figure in cerulean and peach tones with limbs balletically extended and diaphanous deflated parachute trailing above set against a matte grey gradient background. An elegantly spare work with vaguely portentous undertones that strikingly conveys the artist’s distinctive dreamlike aesthetic. Unsigned. On masonite panel in wood frame. Verso with label listing title, series number, medium, artist, and previous gallery price. “13” written on frame and a piece of painter’s tape, and “0671” written on panel. It’s possible that the number written on the frame and painter’s tape and not the one printed on the label is the actual series number—we’ve made inquiries requesting clarification, and will update the listing if and when we receive a reply. Dimensions listed are overall; sight is H 39.5 in. x W 29.25 in. From a collection of the artist’s work that was previously on display at the Mendocino Art Center in Mendocino, California, with this particular piece being featured on the cover of their summer 2012 issue of “Mendocino Arts: Art and Culture in Mendocino County”. One of two works from the “Parachute Jump Series” that we currently have available, with the other—“No. 14”—offered in a separate listing. A prolific painter and printmaker, Jan Stussy was a professor emeritus at the University of California, Los Angeles, where he taught visual arts from 1942 until 1989, as well as at the UCLA Extension, where he taught from 1957 to 1980. In 1977, Stussy co-produced the documentary “Gravity is My Enemy”, for which he received an Academy Award in 1978 at the 50th Academy Awards in the Best Documentary Short Film category. Stussy’s work is found in numerous prestigious public museum collections, including MoMA, the National Gallery of Art, Smithsonian American Art Museum, Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, Oakland Museum of California, Norton Simon Museum, Amon Carter Museum of American Art, and Hammer Museum.

  • Don Paglia, “Composition in Three Tones”, Trompe l’Oeil Realism Painting, 1980
    Located in San Francisco, CA
A 1980 oil glazes over acrylic polymer on canvas trompe l’oeil contemporary realism painting titled “Composition in Three Tones” by notable Los Angeles-based artist, professor, and designer Don Paglia. Extremely realistic yet deceptively unassuming depiction of a rustic and weathered grey wood door reveals impressive touches, textures, and techniques the longer and closer one looks. Narrow black gap between door and frame offers a glimpse at the canvas upon which a thin layer of acrylic polymer has been applied to simulate the look and feel of real wood grain. Finished with glossy oil paint glazes that provide color, shading, and highlights to the wood, doorknob, and other delightfully discoverable details such as exposed nail heads. While the artist’s keen eye, skillful technique, and inventive use of media look great when seen from straight on, they become even more impressive when viewed obliquely and one can appreciate his meticulous recreation of naturally textured materials. Paglia’s distinctive logotype-like signature and date ("'80") is at lower right. Verso with title, media, and name written on canvas, as well as two paper tags from a previous unknown gallery describing the same. In original varnished dark brown wood frame. Dimensions listed are overall; art is H 24.5 in. x W 17.88 in. The following incredibly interesting and impressive artist’s bio is taken from the website of TAG (The Artists Gallery) in Los Angeles, who represents Don Paglia and offers many more of his paintings and sculptural works: “Los Angeles native Don Paglia is currently Emeritus Professor of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at the UCLA School of Medicine. He served as Fulbright Senior Research Scholar in Sub-Saharan Africa and continues to conduct research on medical problems threatening rhinoceroses and other exotic wildlife. Initially a self-taught artist, he received formal training in multiple media under the singular influences of UCLA’s Joe Blaustein and Jan Stussy. He was appointed to the NASA Art Program to document the 1983-84 mission of space shuttle Columbia. His paintings, drawings and sculptures have been exhibited regionally and nationally and have received eleven Best-of-Show awards. They have been included in exhibitions at the Smithsonian and Los Angeles Air & Space Museums, Kennedy Space Center...
