Original Japanese woodblock print by Utagawa Kunisada (1786 – 1865) created around 1855. It depicts the Kabuki actor Bandō Takesaburō I (or Seki Sanjuro) as Gokuin Sen'emon, a character known from ballads, plays, and stories.
The print shows the actor holding a mushikago, or insect cage, likely for fireflies, as suggested by the presence of fireflies in the scene.
The actor is dressed in a checkered kimono and geta sandals, standing on a wooden platform with irises and water in the background.
The text on the print includes the characters 隆子右黒門 [the name of the actor is隆子右黒門]. Woodblock prints like this were popular forms of art and entertainment during the Edo period in Japan, often depicting Kabuki actors in famous roles. Matted, Unframed.
