A 1953 oil painting of a stormy coastal sea by Jens Aabo, who was born in 1898 on the small Danish island of Bornholm.
Atmospheric scene depicts a tiny sailboat as it bobs in waves crashing against a rocky shore, while a steamer ship on the horizon braves rough seas and an approaching rainstorm unleashed by the dark clouds above. Masterful light-infused water and dynamic sense of movement create depth and drama that draw the viewer in.
In original satin ivory lacquered wood frame. Signed and dated at lower right.
On verso is an inscription that appears to be a name and address, which is in the artist’s hand. Affixed to the frame is a typed bio in Danish, which translated reads:
“The painter Jens Aabo was born in Bornholm on May 14, 1898. Has exhibited in ‘The Free Exhibition’, at the painter's end of 1927 [?], as well as at the Aarhushallens Art Exhibition, in addition to several separate and permanent exhibitions. He has been featured and discussed in various encyclopedias, including in the New Biographical Artist’s Lexicon.”
