About the Item

Johan Frederik Cornelis Scherrewitz (Amsterdam 1868-1951 Hilversum) Homebound in the polder Signed ‘Scherrewitz’ (lower right) Oil on canvas, 70x100 cm (incl. frame: 90x120 cm) Width frame: 7 cm Weight: 5 kg Condition: very good condition, only some minor surface dirt Johan Frederik Cornelis Scherrewitz (Amsterdam 1868-1951 Hilversum) Born in Amsterdam, Scherrewitz was initially destined to become a stockbroker, just like his father. Yet this talented artist could not resist his urge to paint and would steer himself into an artistic career. In his spare time, Scherrewitz received drawing lessons from renowned painter Geo Poggenbeek and at the age of 25-years-old he fully commits to his artistic dream. Scherrewitz was heavily influenced by the artists of the famous Hague School, the leading painting style of his youth. Painters such as Jozef Israëls, Anton Mauve and Jacob Maris made a deep impression on the young artist. Just as the painters of the Hague School, Scherrewitz would focus on the atmosphere of landscapes and the daily life of normal everyday farmers. Whether he depicted fishers on the North Sea shore, sheepherders on the heath or horse-riding farmers in the Dutch polders, he captured the essence of Dutch landscapes like no other. His paintings often have a silver shine because of the cloudy grey sky, which dominates the Dutch landscape for most of the year. After 1914 this style became out of fashion in the Netherlands and Scherrewitz would focus on markets overseas. His paintings became extremely popular in the United States of America, Canada, England and Scotland. Most of his painting were sold to wealthy American collectors. Nowadays the paintings of Scherrewitz can still be found in private collection in North America and the United Kingdom as well as museum in the Netherlands such as the Rijksmuseum Twenthe.
