Salzburg, 1604 - Venice, 1698 Coastal view with ruins, fishermen and galleon Coastal view with keep, figures and galleon Oil on canvas, cm. 37×46 On the back on the canvas and frame are inscribed "No. 425" - "No. 426" The two paintings presented here, still in first canvas and in a very good state of preservation, depict two bright coastal views with architectural ruins, figures, and boats with a background on the horizon that opens to the open sea. The layout with the characteristic landscape backdrop that accentuates the distance of the horizon, the description of the close-ups with the lively figurines intent in their activities seem clear references to the hand of the Austrian-born but Italian adopted painter Johann Anton Eismann. The Nordic-style painting technique suggests a date to the last phase of his production when his presence in the lagoon city is attested. Looking carefully at the setting, we are surprised by the innumerable amount of detail, the way Eismann delineates depth, the sloping horizon with diaphanous shades of blue melting into the leaden brightness of the clouds. One must therefore bring out how crucial Eismann's creativity was for Luca Carlevarijs and Marco Ricci in his conception of views suspended between reality and fantasy. This work has not yet obtained a certificate of free export from Italy from the Cultural Heritage Superintendence.
