An exciting and decorative oil on panel depicting a Haystacks under the Thunderstorm. Our painting signed and dated 1946 on the lower right. Fine original condition. Dimensions unframed: W 25.19 In. - H 18.89 In. Dimensions framed: W 31.49 In. - H 26.37 In. Biography : Lucien Jonas, French painter, born to Anzin closed to the city of Valenciennes (North France) and died in Paris September 20th, 1947. Son of an industrialist of the North of France, a founder of an essential oil distillery, Lucien Jonas pursued classic studies to the Valenciennes high-school. He studied the music theory and the violin during seven years to the Valenciennes Academy there, became the holder of high school diploma in 1898, then, after one year to the Academies (Regional education authorities) of Valenciennes, joins the Paris Fine-Arts School. He becomes a member of the French Artists Society from 1901, then he works in Albert Maignan's workshop and meets Harpignies which considered it his protected. He wins several prizes, obtains the second prize of Rome in 1905, then the gold medal in 1907. In 1911, he obtained the National Prize of the Upper Council(Advise) of the Fine arts (School of Fine Arts) for the painting « The Consultation,« and becomes in 1915, military Painter attached to the Army Museum, the official Marine Painter in 1916. The war inspires him numerous drawings and portraits, the life of the miners also. He realizes successfully numerous wall decorations in the Art-Deco style for buildings in Paris (House of Exchanges) and to Valenciennes (The City Hall, The Board of Trade). In honor of his artistic accomplishments, he was made « Chevalier de la Legion d’Honneur » in 1929, he was made Air Painter in 1932 and collaborates in 1933 with the Banque de France for the creation of bank notes. In 1937, he realizes decorations for the Paris World Fair, then creates an essential cardboard for the Gobelins Paris Tapestries Factory, "The Work for France", and he obtains the paint Honor Medal for a fourteen meters long fresco obtains in the French Artists Show in 1945, containing approximately hundred twenty characters « Furor Teutonicus ». A sick person in 1946 and 1947, he paints some outdoor scenes in The Arrow at his parent's house, then returns to Paris where he went out on September 20th, 1947. A big part of its painting from Valenciennes works was destroyed by the bombardments which struck the city in 1940. However, the son of the artist, Jacques Jonas, offered in the 2000s to the Valenciennes Museum hundred drawings and sketches for his wall decorations or of ceilings. The Carnavalet museum in Paris dedicates him a temporary exhibition in 2003, then the Fine arts Museum (School of Fine Arts) of Valenciennes in 2006. All his life, Lucien Jonas paid tribute to Valenciennes and his region, to the picturesque city past, but also to his population, a multitude of faces, jobs, characters and faces always drawn and painted in a living way, with their characteristics and their faults but without wickedness. Outstanding draftsman, virtuoso portrait painter, talented time witness, he drew a real Human Comedy where numerous subjects depicted, scenes of illuminated areas, views of Paris, Annecy, Aix-les-Bains, Nice or the Arrow, magistrates portraits, generals, privates, but also his famous paintings of miners among which one will be chosen to illustrate a commemorative stamp during the Centenary of the mining disaster of Courrières on 1906-2006.
