KPM porcelain plaque "The Love Letter"

About the Item

A very fine 19th century German KPM hand painted porcelain plaque depicting two young ladies reading a letter within a giltwood frame. After the original painting by Franz Von Deffregger (1835-1921). Titled: "The Love Letter" Signed: G. Greiner. Impressed monogram and sceptre mark Framed Height: 18.5" (46cm) Width: 16.5" (41cm) Plaque Height: 10" (25cm) Width: 7" (15.6cm) The Royal Porcelain Factory in Berlin (German: Königliche Porzellan-Manufaktur Berlin) (KPM) was founded in 1763 by Frederick II of Prussia (Frederick the Great). Its actual origins, however, lie in three private enterprises, which, under crown patronage, were trying to establish the production of "white gold" (i.e. porcelain) in Berlin from the mid-18th century onwards. Although it produced a variety of decorative and table wares, Berlin Porcelain is best known for its manufacture of decorative porcelain plaques, which were popular among the buying public from around 1840. Square, ovoid and rectangular “blanks” were sold to independent decorators, who would paint scenes from famous paintings onto their surfaces. From around 1870, exotic scenes, scantily clad characters from ancient Classical myths and sentimental religious tableaus also became popular. Since decorative plaques were in high demand, they were produced in varying quality by a number of different factories. Berlin Porcelain plaques are considered of higher quality than most.

The plaque still bears the retailer's label to the reverse reading 'Gilman Collamore & Co, Union Sq. NY'. The plaque is rectangular in shape, and portrays a young girl, swathed in rich, red draped clothing, reaching upward to give food to a white dove perched on a wire. The interior in which the scene is set is hung with luxurious textiles and decorated with gilt detailing. The plaque is housed in a giltwood frame and is marked to the reverse with the sceptre mark of KPM porcelain, together with the retailer's label. This beautiful antique porcelain plaque exhibits the fine quality of craftsmanship and artistry that the prestigious Berlin porcelain manufactory, KPM, is renowned for. The plaque is delicately painted with the full-length portrait of Duchess Louise of Mecklenburg-Strelitz (1776-1810), Queen of Prussia and wife of King William III (1770-1840). Louise was a popular Queen and was respected for her successful negotiations with Napoleon, before he became Emperor of France. In this plaque, she is depicted descending the steps of the Charlottenburg Palace, Berlin, which was the seat of the Prussian monarchy. She wears a simple robe a l'anglaise, which was fashionable at the time, and looks directly at the viewer in a symbol of power and majesty. The plaque is signed to the lower right by the artist 'Emile Eckhart', who worked for KPM. It is painted after a famous work by celebrated German artist Gustav Karl Ludwig Richter...
