About the Item
A striking large painting by Australian Aboriginal artist Mabel Juli (b. 1931) circa 1990s. This large abstract landscape painting on the dreamscape of the Western Australian Desert was boldly executed with several shades of earth pigments. The contrast of their colors, the granule textures of the surface and the abstract composition made it visually arresting.
Provenance: inscribed verso: "Warmun Art Centre, Mabel Juli 409/08 " Paper label affixed from "Gallery Gabrielle Pizzi Gallery, Melbourn, Australia", where the painting was originally purchased prior to 2004.
Mabel Juli started painting in 1980s at the Warmun Art Centre, encouraged by artists Rover Thomas and Queenie McKenzie. Best known for her striking paintings using natural pigments that depicts Garnkiny doo Wardel (Moon and Star) based on the Ngarranggarni story, her inherited dreaming in which the ancestors laid down and formed the landscape of the East Kimberley in Western Australia.
Her art is in the permanent collections of the Art Gallery of South Australia, National Gallery of Victoria, Art Gallery of New South Wales, Parliament of Western Australia Art Collection, the Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tāmaki, New Zealand, and the National Gallery of Australia.
