Large Historic 18th-Century Painting of Saint Eligius from 1790

About the Item

We offer you the rare opportunity to acquire an authentic piece of French religious history: a large 18th-century painting depicting Saint Eligius, created in 1790 in Grand Cléry. This painting, of great heritage value, comes from the prestigious collection of the Bonnefontaine Abbey, located in the French Ardennes. This masterpiece has withstood the test of time, surviving the turmoil of the French Revolution. During one of the most tumultuous periods in history, it was carefully hidden during the attacks on the abbey, thus escaping the destruction that befell so many other religious works of art. The artwork portrays Saint Eligius, a saint revered for his integrity and exceptional skill in goldsmithing. The traditional symbols of the saint are prominently featured: the anvil, hammer, horseshoe, and golden scepter, representing his trade and spiritual influence. Born near Limoges around 588, Saint Eligius first distinguished himself as a talented goldsmith before becoming a minister to King Dagobert and eventually the Bishop of Noyon. His exemplary life, marked by honesty and devotion, made him the patron saint of mechanics, goldsmiths, blacksmiths, and metalworkers, as well as the French Air Force. This painting, with its impressive dimensions (67.3 inches high by 35 inches wide), not only honors Saint Eligius but also embodies the rich history of the Bonnefontaine Abbey. Founded in 1152 by returning crusaders under the guidance of Saint Bernard of Clairvaux, this Cistercian abbey was a spiritual center until it was abandoned in 1790 following the French Revolution. Although the abbey has since suffered numerous destructions, this artwork miraculously survived, serving as a testament to the faith and art of that era. In essence, this painting is more than just a work of art; it is a historical relic, a tangible memory of a bygone era, and a celebration of the life of Saint Eligius, whose renown endures through the centuries. To own this painting is to possess a piece of France's spiritual and artistic heritage.

French 18th Century Portrait Signed Legrand, 1790

18th century oval portrait oil on canvas of an aristocrat The individual with the mischievous look wears a highly voluminous powdered starch hairdo. An earring on his ear is a rare example of coquetry in a picture. His corner smile and brave cheekbones distinguish the character. The eighteenth century is an era of grace. We have never seen men and women so properly prepared throughout history. The extravagant display was consistent with the rococo aesthetic. Powdered hairstyles became fashionable among males in the 17th century, under the reign of Louis14, the Sun King. At the period, France ruled fashion, and its influence expanded to other countries. This gentleman reflects the entirety of the Grand Siecle...
