Late 19th Century Chinese Scroll of Eagle on a Stone Overhang
About the Item
Classical S composition of pine bough in the foreground leading into the outcropping of rock which in turn subtly curves upward along the bird of prey's body to his arched wing.
The calligraphic inscription to the left of the eagle loosely translated indicates that this painting was a gift to a commanding officer in the army acknowledging his bravery and his discipline to follow his orders "not to attack".
The bird of prey perched "before flight" is symbolic of a brave warrior held in position.
