Leandro Bassano, Portrait of a Savant

About the Item

Leandro Bassano (Bassano del Grappa 1557 - Venise 1662) Portrait of a savant Venise, XVI century Oil on canvas; modern frame. Measures: 117 x 88 cm - Attribution proposed by Professeur David Dotti, expertise dated 2012. Son of the great Jacopo Bassano, Leandro was formed in the father’s workshop. At the end of Cinquecento, he began to receive the most important Venetian commissions and the paintings of this period are strongly influenced by Jacopo Bassano's models. The portrait can be compared with different autograph works by the artist such as the double portrait from the Royal Collections of Hampton Court and the portrait of Cardinal Giovanni Dolfin from the Museo Civico di Padova. The three-quarter representation, the obvious search for realism and the veiled chromatic palette are characteristic of Leandro Bassano style; the painter played a prominent role in the field of Venetian portrait between XVI and XVII century.
