About the Item

"Alphée et Aréthuse," by Leopold Burthe (French, 1823-1860); oil on canvas, signed and dated 1846, lower left (image #6). Burthe studied under Amaury-Duval at the Ecole des Beaux Arts; he began exhibiting at the Paris Salon in 1844. Friends included Gerome. Jalabert, and Ingres (in whose style he painted). Burthe strived to paint in a simple, untainted manner, which reflected his admiration for the works of Fra Angelico. Thanks to the research of an expert in the field, the subject of this painting has been identified not, as previously stated, Jupiter and Juturna, but Alphée et Aréthuse, taken from the Metamorphoses by Ovid. This painting is probably the one sent by the artist to the Salon in 1847 and exhibited under number 257.
