"Lightning" Abstract Watercolor on Paper by William Alexander Gaw

About the Item

Verticality, the beginning of a spiritual quest, is one of the first remarkable elements of this painting. The sacred aspect is revealed by an orientation towards the sky, aspiring to elevation. If abstraction flees realism, it is not without seeking another refuge, that of interiority, feeling, and spirituality. In 1945, the date of this work, abstraction is no longer a revolution, but it still undergoes transformations and continues to evolve. The end of the Second World War marks a period of renewal and reconstruction, both in the urban landscape and in the souls of individuals. The artists, utopians in their own right, seek a better world through their works. This historical context is decisive for understanding this work. Unfortunately, the artist's signature is indecipherable. In this canvas, lines, dots, scratches run through and delimit the field of vision, without giving rise to a recognizable object or subject. On the left, an enigmatic structure emerges in darker tones reminiscent of the texture of wood. One could guess the outline of a country or a human silhouette, but to give in to this temptation would be to move away from the silent discourse of abstraction. This ambiguity feeds our imagination as spectators. These traces are fragments of the artist’s language, an attempt to communicate beyond the words and ornaments of figuration. These signs evoke the union of chaos and order, translating the upheaval of an era seeking to give meaning to what has just ended and to what is being born. Here, color asserts itself boldly. It becomes the subject. A radiant yellow bursts forth from the surface of the painting, evoking a vital energy, an eternal flame that seems to spread throughout the composition. This powerful color, the symbol of the sun and light, acts like a beating heart, injecting life into the pictorial framework and giving the painting an almost organic dimension. This small abstract format embodies the greatness of abstraction in its ability to transcend the limits of traditional representation, inviting us to deep reflection, questioning our perception, our emotions, and our very conception of spiritual interiority in art. It is a work that resists resolution, that rejects any attempt to be fully grasped, reminding us that the very essence of art sometimes lies in that which cannot be fully explained.
