About the artist
Louis Francois Decoeur (Namen 1884 – Namen 1960) was a painter and wood carver. He worked in and around the area of Brussels and is mainly known for his rural scenes of peasant life. He was inspired by the countryside around the capital. His style belongs to the expressionistic movement and is characterized by very sharp outlines. His synthetic style evolves towards an expressionism which sometimes recalls the work of Brusselmans.
Expressionism is a modernist movement, originating in Germany at the beginning of the 20th century. Its typical trait is to present the world solely from a subjective perspective, distorting it radically for emotional effect in order to evoke moods or ideas. This painting by Decoeur shows an average moment on a busy street. The artist chose to cut the people of, like a photograph which gives the painting a more dynamic feeling. In the background there are facades of houses covering the horizon and contours of horses, carriages and people. In the front two men are painted, both minding their own business. Between the two men, a third figure is seen, who seems to be selling newspapers on the street. The painting is signed with the artist name in the bottom left corner."
