Luigi Pagan Chioggia, 1907 – 1980 Lungo il Canal Vena (dal Ponte S. Andrea), 1967 Firma in basso a sinistra: Pagan olio su tavola cm. 20×100 entro cornice per complessivi cm. 32,5×113 Il dipinto, in ottimo stato di conservazione, raffigura una delle vedute più caratteristiche di Chioggia e certamente tra le più amate dal pittore. Il formato stretto e lungo fornisce una veduta quasi dal formato quadrangolare del fotografo del Canal Vena a Chioggia presa dal Ponte di Sant’Andrea (così come si legge nella scritta a penna di pugno dello stesso Pagan al retro della tavola). Colpiscono i colori vivi e sgargianti di una città colta nel suo aspetto più realistico, con le figure a piedi lungo le rive e i ponti, le barche ormeggiate, i palazzi nello stile della Serenissima. Nato da una famiglia di pescatori, Pagan si caratterizza fin da giovane per la sua sensibilità pittorica e per un carattere ribelle. Per tutta la sua esistenza dipingerà la sua gente, scene di pescatori e di cortili con rapide pennellate fervide di cromatismo e di commovente poesia. A 17 anni scappò da casa per andarsene a Torino dove farà l’operaio, l’impiegato e il decoratore di scenografie per il teatro al fine di pagarsi un maestro di pittura e quando si sente in grado di esprimere e tirar fuori quello che aveva dentro, la nostalgia del suo mare e della sua gente lo riporta a Chioggia, dove continuerà comunque a studiare pittura recandosi all’Accademia delle Belle Arti di Venezia. Ben presto i suoi meriti artistici verranno riconosciuti dai luminari dell’epoca e parliamo di Milesi, Bazzaro, Pavan, Brombo e Galimberti che lo incoraggiano ed accolgono tributandogli anche dei premi a mostre e concorsi. Con Brombo e Galimberti stringerà una amicizia profonda ed una proficua collaborazione. Nel 1936 inizierà ad esporre alla Bevilaqua La Masa; lo stesso nel 1937, anno in cui espose anche a Cavarzere, Bologna, Venezia Cà Pesaro e più volte nella sua Chioggia. Una vita di successi, specialmente nelle due decadi tra gli anni Cinquanta e Settanta, che lo hanno portato nelle più importanti collezioni nazionali e in quelle dei grandi amanti della pittura veneta del Novecento.
